UWE appoints Acting VC

Steve WestThe Board of the University of the West of England is pleased to announce that Professor Steven West will assume the post of Acting Vice-Chancellor with effect from 1 September 2007.

Ray Burton, Chairman of Governors said, “We have every confidence in Steve and he has the Board's full authority to proceed with the development plans already under way.”

Professor West said, “I am delighted to be appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor. The University of the West of England is a fantastic place and is well-positioned to take forward and deliver its strategic plans. I am confident that the talented staff and students we have are determined to work together to develop a world-class university for the 21st century: a university recognised for its commitment to students, excellence in teaching and learning, research and knowledge exchange, and partnership working.”

Ray Burton continued, “The vision and strategy established by the University has the full support of the Governors, the senior management team, the Students' Union, and the overwhelming majority of the University's staff. In the last year, student retention has improved, graduate employment, student satisfaction and research income have all increased, twelve colleges have joined the UWE Federation, and a clutch of our students have won prizes in national competitions. We have developed new strategies for an enhanced student experience, for research, for knowledge exchange, and for widening participation. The University has a strong platform upon which to build and deliver future success.”

Professor West is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West of England. Steve West joined UWE in 1995 as Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Care, a Faculty with over 5,000 students. He is a member of the Strategic Health Authority for the South West, and Chair of the Council of Deans (representing UK faculties of Nursing and Health professionals). His research interests include podiatry and the modernisation agenda of the NHS.
