- UWE students dominate RTS award nominations - 09/02/2010
Media Practice and Animation students from the University of the West of England (UWE) have been shortlisted in every category for this year's regional finals of the South West RTS awards. Out of the seven finalists, five are from UWE. The award ceremony will be held at the Picture House on Whiteladies Road in Bristol on 11 February 2010.
- Device to sniff out stomach bugs could save NHS millions - 05/02/2010
Testing has begun on a device that can sniff out the presence of disease by smell, thanks to a £1.3 million award from the Wellcome Trust. OdoReader, developed by Norman Ratcliffe and Ben deLacyCostello from the University of the West of England and Chris Probert from the University of Bristol, uses pioneering technology to rapidly diagnose Clostridium difficile, by 'reading' the odour of stool samples. Clostridium difficile may cause severe diarrhoea, especially amongst hospitalised patients.

Students from two Bristol schools will show off their skills as Science Communicators at the Mall Galleries on Sunday 7 February.
The Orchard School and Downend Technical College have worked with scientists who specialise in science communication from the University of the West of England to find out more about how evolution is relevant in everyday life.

Dr Tim Chatterton, an air quality management expert from the University of the West of England, has been awarded a prestigious placement fellowship working with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). The Fellowship is in partnership with the Research Councils Energy Programme (Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and EPSRC) and DECC.

Professor Jim Longhurst of the University of the West of England is playing a major role in South Africa's moves towards a low carbon future. He has been invited by the South African Academy of Sciences to serve on its high-profile Consensus Panel for Low Carbon Cities which holds its first meeting on 1 February.

Siamak joined the convoy of 200 vehicles and 500 travellers that departed the UK in early December and returned to Bristol earlier this month.

An innovative partnership has just kicked off between the University of the West of England's software design experts and media company Rubber Republic. The Bristol-based company produces video and online films and games for advertising and PR purposes. It designed its own in-house software, called the Viral Ad Network, to manage campaigns and uniquely, track the success of viral advertising.
