Learning outcomes:

On completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Present and explain different approaches to leadership in trans-national operations in Europe and link them to their personal experience (Component A)

• Lead an informed discussion about different approaches to and/or changes in leadership and business culture in Europe with a view to predicting future developments (Component A)

• Research and analyse case studies of top executives in European business and contextualise them as part of a debate on leadership styles, structural change, European integration and globalisation (Component B)

Syllabus outline:

• Advanced discussion of national models of doing business in different European member states

• Addressing structural and demographic change, European integration and globalisation in theory and practice

• An examination of leadership issues in trans-national operations in relation to national models of doing business

• Comparative case studies of top executives, leadership styles and cultural change in European business

Teaching and learning methods:

This module will be taught in English, through a combination of lectures and seminars. There will be one lecture and one seminar per week. Seminars will be used for students to give presentations using PowerPoint and to discuss the results of their research.

Reading Strategy:

All students will be encouraged to make full use of print and electronic resources available to them through membership of the University. These include a range of electronic books (e.g. ebooks, ebrary), electronic journals (available through Ebsco, Emerald, Sage databases), multidisciplinary databases (e.g. LexisNexis, FAME) and a variety of resources available through websites and information gateways. The University Library’s web pages provide access to subject-relevant resources and services, and to the library catalogue. Many resources can be accessed remotely. Students will be presented with opportunities within the curriculum to develop their information retrieval and evaluation skills in order to identify such resources effectively. It is expected that bibliographies and references in assignments will reflect the range of reading carried out.

The indicative reading list in this module may include the same titles as module “Leadership and Culture 1”. However, relevant materials for case studies discussed in this module will be added on Blackboard.
