Learning outcomes:

    When they have successfully completed this module, students will be able to demonstrate:

    1. an ability to critically evaluate, contrast and combine different approaches to therapeutic work with groups;

    2. a critical understanding of the stages of planning, running and evaluating counselling psychology groups;

    3. a critical understanding of relevant theories of and research into group process and development;

    4. an ability to work effectively using a relational approach to counselling psychology in groups;

    5. a working knowledge of cognitive and behavioural approaches to counselling psychology in groups;

    6. the ability to understand and integrate aspects of organisational theory into their practice;

    7. the ability to transfer some of their understanding of the individual as client to their work with organisations as clients.

Syllabus outline:

    Approaches to counselling psychology in groups; a comparison of individual and group work; processes of change in groups.

    Theories of group process and development.

    Planning, running and evaluating counselling psychology groups.

    Organisational theory. Contracts with organisations. Organisations as clients.

Teaching and learning methods:

    Short inputs via lectures, videos and guided reading; discussion groups; experiential groups; task groups - planning and running group activities.

Reading Strategy

All students will be encouraged to make full use of the print and electronic resources available to them through membership of the University. These include a range of electronic journals and a wide variety of resources available through web sites and information gateways. The University Library’s web pages provide access to subject relevant resources and services, and to the library catalogue. Many resources can be accessed remotely. Students will be presented with opportunities within the curriculum to develop their information retrieval and evaluation skills in order to identify such resources effectively.

This guidance will be available either in the module handbook, via the module information on UWEonline or through any other vehicle deemed appropriate by the module/programme leaders.
