Learning Outcomes:

On satisfactory completion of this module the student will be able to:

    Knowledge and Understanding

    • Demonstrate the core subject specific skills relevant to the production role on which they are working.

    • Understand the overall process of mounting a theatre production, and the role of each individual and department therein.

    Intellectual Skills

    • Problem solve – interpreting the creative requirements of the production and translating these to a practical realisation.

    • Research different approaches to realizing aspects of a production for which they take responsibility.

    Subject / Practical Skills

    • Organise the requirements of a public production as defined by the production’s creative team, obtaining them for the production and ensuring their correct setting and maintenance in performance and return after the production closes.

    • Undertake a specific management or technical role on a theatre production team under the supervision of a specialist tutor.

    • Organize, annotate and keep a record of the requirements for the production as appropriate to the production role undertaken, and use that information to run the performance accurately, as rehearsed.

    Transferable Skills

    • Communicate effectively with other members of the production team.

    • Demonstrate professional competence in the chosen department

    • Prioritise work loads.

    • Document working methods and relevant aspects of a production.

    • Work safely and to deadlines.

Syllabus outline:

The student takes on a stage management or technical role for a public production.

The student will, carry out the relevant duties of one of these positions during the rehearsal and performance period, on at least one public theatre production during the second year. In the majority of cases students will take the role from within the stage management team or equivalent role in another production department (eg in lighting, sound or technical management). The decision can reflect the area of employment a student may wish to pursue.

Teaching and learning methods:

Students learn through practical stage work on a public production, carrying out their duties as part of a team. Supervised by their allocated tutor, students learn by practical experience in a professional context. As reference, students are providing and guided through a professional job description for the role they are undertaking. Judgments about their performance are made within this professional context.

Reading Strategy

Students are encouraged to become familiar with the subject area, and texts specific to the module, through reading lists and reference material provided. Lists are updated annually to maintain currency and relevance. Each department holds texts and reference material, as well as the general access provided to the School’s library and access to the Internet. The specifically vocational nature of training and study, combined with the project based nature of learning on the course, may require that students are guided to reading and research material in the first instance by the module leader.

NB: BOVTS students do not have access to UWE Libraries and UWE OnLine

Indicative sources:

The primary source for this module will be the text or script for the production concerned.

Depending on the production department (eg. stage management, lighting, sound, propmaking, scenic construction etc.) the reading and research required will vary. Students will already be familiar with the main subject specific texts from their level 1 training.

This is a project module there is no Component B and Component A is weighted at 100%.

The student’s performance in relation to a professional role will be assessed. Particular account will be taken of contribution to the team, the ability to interpret information from director and designer, demonstration of knowledge and understanding of stage or technical management duties and responsibilities, application in a public production context of skills learnt in first year. An account of the production will be recorded in a brief written report in which students will be required to reflect and draw conclusions about their own performance.
