PhD Studentship in Science Communication (HLS/PHD)

We are seeking a motivated natural science/social science/science communication graduate to undertake an innovative interdisciplinary research project focusing on science communication to start in January 2010.
The studentship for the following project is available from January 2010 for a period of 3-years, subject to satisfactory progress, and attracts a tax exempt stipend of £13,200 pa.
Candidates should propose an area for PhD study combining a science communication perspective (Science Communication Unit http://scu.uwe.ac.uk/) with one of the following research areas:
• Appearance Research http://hls.uwe.ac.uk/research/car.aspx
• Biomedical and Bio-sensing Sciences http://www.biosensingtech.co.uk/
• Health and Well-Being of Children http://hls.uwe.ac.uk/research/centre-for-public-health-research.aspx
The studentship is funded by the UWE Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and will involve collaboration between the Science Communication Unit (SCU) and a maximum of one other Faculty research grouping. The UWE SCU has over ten years of international experience in engaging and researching public interaction with science and technology in interesting and innovative formats.
The successful applicant will work with a supervisory team to develop a project grounded in the field of science communication or public engagement with a focus on one of the subject areas outlined above. The project may involve the creation of a science communication or public engagement activity which is used as a platform for investigation (e.g. using new media tools, drama or hands-on activities), or it might use a research methodology (e.g. surveys or interviews) to explore theoretical perspectives about engaging with or communicating research in any of the above fields.
The ideal candidate will be open to new ideas, have a willingness to engage in interdisciplinary work and be an excellent communicator. We are seeking candidates who have at least a good honours undergraduate degree i.e. 2:1 or 1, preferably a masters degree in natural science, social science or science communication. Knowledge and experience of science communication or social science methods is desirable but is not essential.
