Sir Roger Bone, President of Boeing UK, will deliver a lecture entitled: 'Global Innovation – Boeing and the UK' as part of the Distinguished Executive Address Series.
In 2013 Boeing celebrates 75 years of partnership with the United Kingdom. Today the UK is a significant source of supply for Boeing as well as being home to many of its customers, employees and research partners. How did Boeing and Britain forge such strong links and what does the future hold for the partnership, for its customers and for the technology that underpins them all?
Sir Roger Bone was appointed President of Boeing UK in September 2005. He is responsible for coordinating all Boeing business activities enterprise-wide in Britain from the Boeing UK offices in central London.
In addition, Sir Roger accepted an invitation from the UK Prime Minister in 2010 to be an honorary ambassador for British business.
Before his appointment at Boeing, Sir Roger rose to the rank of ambassador in a 38-year career in the British Diplomatic Service. Sir Roger was HM Ambassador to Brazil from 1999 to 2004 and to Sweden from 1995 to 1999. He was an assistant undersecretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London from 1991 to 1995.
Prior to these positions, Sir Roger was political counsellor at the British Embassy in Washington, DC, and private secretary to the UK Foreign Secretaries Francis Pym and Sir Geoffrey Howe between 1982 and 1984. After graduating from Oxford University in 1966, Sir Roger joined the Diplomatic Service serving around the globe. He worked as first secretary in the UK representation to the European Community in Brussels from 1978 to 1982 and before that in the Moscow Embassy during the Brezhnev era. He was also a visiting fellow at Harvard University from 1984 to 1985. He was head of economic relations at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1989 to 1991, with responsibilities for advising ministers on a range of issues, focusing in particular on Latin American debt and economic aid for Russia and the former Soviet states.
Sir Roger gained extensive experience during his diplomatic career in negotiating on behalf of industrial interests in his overseas assignments, with particular experience in the aerospace sector. Sir Roger is also a non-executive director of F&C Investment Trust plc, the oldest investment trust in the city of London, and a director of Continental Data Graphics Ltd.
