| Indian Head Massage and Thermal Auricular Therapy |
|
Date:
18 March 2010 - 30 March 2010 Helen Flower Venue: The Octagon, Frenchay Campus |
|
Indian Head Massage is derived from the most basic form of touch therapy. The natural tendency to rub something better has been formalised over thousands of years to develop into the system of therapeutic touch that we know today as massage. Thermal Auricular Therapy (also known as Hopi ear candling) is a pleasant, non-invasive treatment of the ears which is used to treat a variety of conditions. During treatment, the client lies on their side and the lit candle is gently twisted into the auditory canal. The candle is held vertically in this position until it has burned down, this takes approximately 10 mins and is then gently removed. The process is repeated for the other ear. After this an ear and face massage is given to help clear ear and nasal passages. This treatment is both therapeutic and relaxing and the client may find afterwards that they can hear and breath more easily. Sessions 18, 23 and 30 March.

The commercial value of technical innovations can only be maximised by a business if appropriate steps are taken to protect its competitive position. Legal tools - patents, copyright, registered designs and trademarks - can give strong protection of intellectual property (IP) as long as their limitations and costs are well understood. However strategic steps can also be effective. Secrecy, sticky products, brands, continual improvement and control of routes to market can all help maintain a leading competitive position based on innovative products.

The Permeable Self: Intersubjectivity, Bodily Experience and Remembering in Autism. Current accounts of intersubjectivity, with a focus on the development of self-consciousness in individuals with autism. Typically described as isolated, detached, and as displaying limited self-awareness, this talk will introduce the notion that such individuals may also experience heightened forms of self-awareness, and that many of the symptoms associated the condition may be related to an overly permeable sense of self at the embodied level, which may lead to difficulties in affective and pragmatic relations with others. Incorporates a psychological research and phenomenology perspective. Contact: Sue Gamble Email: susan3.gamble@live.uwe.ac.uk |

Collotype is one of the oldest of the photomechanical techniques but nevertheless one of the finest with regard to tone and image quality (even by today's standards). Like photogravure it is able to print photographic quality continuous tone in ink, however, where photogravure is an intaglio process, collotype is planographic medium, using a similar principles to those of lithography for the creation of prints. This four-day masterclass will provide hands-on instruction in all aspects of each version of collotype printing including the creation of suitable negatives for the process and the traditional gelatine coated glass plate technique as well as the more readily accessible gelatine coated film method that became popular in the US in the 1980's.
